Wigton Moor 8 v Lepton Highlanders 3
Today we entertained Lepton Highlanders, who I have got to say are a friendly group, girls, and parents alike and have a fantastic coach in Paul who is one of the nicest people you will ever meet.
Unfortunately for us Lepton Highlanders have been a thorn in our side for the past 2 seasons and if you like, our bogey team having beaten us in the cup final last season, in the final of the Lepton gala and showing true grit coming back from 4-1 down to draw 4-4 in the opening fixture this season so I wasn’t looking forward to the fixture at all and also considering, we have not played for a month.
It was touch and go whether the game was going ahead having rained heavy all week and the night before and especially after the U15s had cancelled their game due to the pitches being waterlogged in several areas.
Thankfully the weather held out, a bit of work here and there on the pitch and the late kick off time, the referee decided we could play the game.
The first half started but its best forgotten as we looked like a team that hadn’t played for a month and the Lepton girls got into the groove and soon went 2 up from a lovely strike from the edge of the box and an uncharacteristic goalkeeping error from Ruth.
Every time we got the ball we passed it to a Lepton player and our tackling was none existent allowing Lepton to dominate the first half although we started to progress in the last 5-10 min and as a result we scored twice, the first from a fantastic corner from Gabby, beautifully flighted in to the danger area only for a Lepton player to head it into her own goal and Sam scored our second goal from a angled shot from the edge of the box.
Half time 2-2
After a stern half time team talk and a few changes here and there, the second half got underway and it was clear from the off that we were in the groove playing some fantastic pass and move football and using the width of the pitch although reverting to the long ball from defence at times.
I must say that although we looked a little dodgy in defence today particularly in the first half we where exceptional going forward especially the second half with Sam and Sharne taking on players and providing excellent crosses in to the danger area resulting in some excellent goals.
As a result we scored a further 6 second half goals, with one of best been a 30 yard toe bung by our left back Sophie with Lepton scoring a superb second half goal with their forward taking on 4 defenders and slotting the ball home.
Full time 8-3
Overall a fantastic second half performance, all the girls showed great character coming back from 2 nil down and that’s a real credit to you all well done!!
Ruth: Apart from the mistake for Lepton’s 2nd goal you did well although I would like you to be more confident and come off your line more but this will come with regular games.
Lydia: Played well in a difficult first half, you needed more protection from your midfield teammates.
Kathryn: Looked assured coming on for Lydia at right back, one of your best games and was unlucky not to get Managers player of the match.
Paola: Played well in a difficult first half, you needed more protection from your midfield teammates, just try and stand off an attacker rather than getting sucked in.
Elle K: Very much like Paola, in that you need to stand your ground rather than diving into the tackle, we will work on this in training with the defensive stance, a much better second half performance.
Sophie: A fantastic second half performance you are now starting to get stuck into the tackle, just try and keep your composure as sometimes you tend to panic when making clearances, a brilliant goal did you mean it or was it a clearance?
Gabby: Gabby’s very much a team player, her vision is fantastic and her corner taking was tremendous today, she also played in 2 different position’s and did a fantastic job in both, a true all round player, keep it up!!
Olivia: looked a bit out of sorts in the first half but made up for it with a big second half performance, scored 2 goals and was unlucky not to get the parents player of the match vote.
Sam: Scored the equalizer and played superb today, you are now starting to get back and defend when required another player who was unlucky not to get the parent player of the match vote.
Abby: Played in 2 different positions and put in a workmanlike performance in both halves, considering you have been unwell all week you did very well.
Jodie: Whippet played very well today linking up with Sharne superbly down the right hand side particularly the second half and scored a goal as well, Keep it up!!
Aliyah: Had to come off injured but made some excellent runs in the first half, one of the success stories at Wigton Moor.
Sharne: The smallest player in our team and possibly the league but she plays her football with a big heart, came on as a second half substitute and played a blinder her crossing today was exceptional resulting in several goals also won both the Managers and Parents player of the match vote. Well done!!
Elle-May: Scored 2 goals and had a great second half, she is always willing to get back and defend for the team but needs to stand off from her playing partner and position herself better at times, very vocal today Keep it up!!
